State Mental Health Agency Use of Medicaid to Provide Mental Health Services

Medicaid has become the largest single funding source in many states supporting SMHA systems. This report highlights the different ways Medicaid is being used to finance mental health services, including the use of Medicaid Managed Care or fee-for-service reimbursement approaches, the role of the SMHA in setting Medicaid Rates for mental health services, and SMHA initiatives to link specialty MH data with Medicaid claims data.
